December 19th is a very special day (Jason’s birthday!), so we decided to go to a very special restaurant ~ Stalla. It’s located inside the Beau Rivage between B.R. Prime and Jia. It has a beautiful, rustic, dark, warm decor and an open kitchen. (Due to the darkness, I apologize in advance for the quality of the pictures). The music selection was really good too. They were fairly busy for a Wednesday night, which is always a good sign. They have a really cool $25 wine list, with a good selection of wine by the bottle. We are always looking for a good deal so we chose a bottle from the list ~ the Boxhead Shiraz. It was medium bodied and fruity with a little spice. It’s definitely worth a try.
Before I go on, I have to mention how unprofessional the service was. We waited quite awhile to be greeted. The busser asked if we wanted water – well duh! We overheard our server say she had a “brainfart” while greeting the table next to us and explaining the specials. I guess I expected more from this quality of a restaurant.
They had a very cool bread basket with a variety of breads and a trio of dips. Since our server failed to tell us what they were, we guessed that it was pesto sauce, hummus, and marinara.
For the appetizer, we had the Calamari. It lacked seasoning and was a little too chewy. (It could have used a little extra time marinating.) The aioli was really good though. Unsurprisingly, there was no check back on the appetizer.
For my entree I had the Linguini with Clams. It was overly buttery and had very few clams. It also had tomatoes and basil, but there wasn’t quite enough basil for my taste. Overall, I was not impressed and the flavor was just “meh”.
Jason had the Veal Porterhouse, which was very good. It was tender and didn’t seem to have a lot of seasoning at first but it must have been marinated really well. The flavor was excellent. It was topped with a red wine sauce and served with fava beans, mushrooms, and asparagus ~ all tasty.
Back to the poor service, we finished our entrees and were never offered more bread. It would have been nice to have some to go along with the entrees. She did ask if we wanted to see a dessert menu, but I think it was the way she said it that irked me. Maybe I was just irritated with her by then. We did get dessert, the Liquid Snickers Creme Brulee. It was AMAZING! (I’m going to have to figure out how to make it!)
They had a special deal that week where you get 25% off your total bill. Very cool! When we got the bill and didn’t see the discount, we asked the server if we were supposed to get one and she said “Oh, yeah you do.” (Grrrr) Despite the service, we were impressed with the restaurant and would like to try it again. Overall it was a good night and a good birthday for Jason!
